#ChooseToChallenge this International Women’s Day

Kingsley Napley continue to support International Women’s Day to help forge a more gender equal world. As a firm we pride ourselves on having a workforce made up of over 69% women, with more than 50% in the partnership. However, we know that much work still has to be done in the legal sector and beyond.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge. Kingsley Napley has invited seven influential individuals to discuss their personal experiences and how they are challenging gender bias and inequality in their own industries. Through these conversations we are able to shine a light on a diverse range of sectors including sport, politics, tech and the creative industries. These interviews are both a celebration of some truly inspirational women and an insight into the challenges which still lie ahead. 
 
The shine a light interview series has been created to support the six missions of International Women’s Day, which are to:

  • Celebrate tech women and innovation
  • Applaud equality for women in sport
  • Build inclusive workplaces so women thrive
  • Forge women’s empowerment worldwide
  • Educate women on health choice decisions 
  • Increase the visibility of women creatives 

Celebrating and marking IWD is more important than ever after a year which saw existing inequalities between men and women exacerbated due to the pandemic. Women have been more likely to lose their jobs than men, accounting somewhat shockingly for 100% of the 140,000 jobs lost in the US in December 2020. Women have been more likely to take on the bulk of caring responsibilities, particularly for children, as the pandemic saw mass school closures.

Domestic violence against women has intensified globally with support services struggling to cope. This has led UN Women to launch a campaign against this ‘Shadow Pandemic’. And while women have been at the forefront of tackling the pandemic as they represent the majority of people working in health and social care roles, they have been massively under-represented in the decision making bodies charged with determining national responses.

A 2020 study found that of 115 dedicated COVID-19 task forces in 87 countries, 85.2% were made up of mainly men and that only 30% of health ministers in the EU are women. In the UK, this decision making imbalance has been starkly visible in the COVID-19 press conferences – between May and December not a single press conference was led by a female minister.

As we look forward to a post-pandemic world, it is so important that these new and more stark inequalities do not get baked into our future. Kingsley Napley look forward to using our platform during the week of IWD and beyond to increase the visibility of women’s achievements, to celebrate progress that has been made and to continue to challenge obstacles – new and old – to creating an inclusive world.
