It is well known that London is regarded as ‘divorce capital of the world’ largely for its generous treatment of wives in the event of marriage breakdown. Dubai, on the other hand, has developed a reputation as ‘divorce capital of the world’ for a different reason - the high number of marriages that end there with a high rate of fallouts amongst the expat community.
For expatriate residents of the UAE getting divorced can be complicated enough with different local and English laws governing asset splitting, spousal support and the parameters of the final settlement but when children are involved things only get more complicated.
In Dubai, a woman was recently seeking a divorce from her husband on the grounds that he couldn’t satisfy her sexual needs. In what is usually considered a traditional culture where, for example, sex out of marriage is punishable by imprisonment and the perceived role of men and women in society and at home is very different to the UK, the case grabbed our attention.
As we leave the winter behind, and with it the trivialisation of divorce by some parts of the media and the frenzy of “Black Monday” and “D Day”, the asset-rich in unhappy marriages should start thinking about when, strategically, to end their marriages.
