ICAEW accountants: take action now!
On 5 June 2018, a special meeting of the ICAEW is taking place at the conclusion of the organisation’s AGM. For any ICAEW members with an interest in the disciplinary function of their regulator, attendance at this event is a must. Important changes to the Disciplinary Bye Laws, that will potentially affect all members, are being sought. If you cannot make it in person, vote on-line or send a proxy. In these latest proposals there is much to be applauded, but there is also much to be apprehensive about.

The PSA’s Lessons Learned Review – Regulators take heed
The Professional Standards Authority has published its review into the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (‘NMC’) treatment of a number of serious allegations against Furness General Hospital (FGH) midwives in relation to the tragic deaths of babies and some mothers between 2004 and 2016. Although titled a “Lessons Learned Review”, the report does not hold back in launching criticism at the NMC which identified the need to “address very serious concerns about the way in which it deals with families and patients and whether it is a transparent, open organisation”. Indeed, the PSA report catalogues many issues which other regulators, including those operating outside of health and social care, would be advised to consider.

A nail-biting time for BACP as it awaits the outcome of the PSA’s annual review
In December 2016 the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) was criticised by the High Court for seeking to hold a hearing into a complaint that had already been determined by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). See our previous blog, ‘Dogged and obstinate’ BACP prevented from proceeding to adjudicate on a complaint already disposed of by the UKCP, for the outcome of that case.

A new framework for psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and counselling
Last month, the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) announced the latest phase of their joint collaboration; the creation of an education and practise framework for the counselling and psychotherapy professions.
