IWD: Women’s global struggle

Previous blogs on the topic of IWD have looked at the struggles in the developed world, and the on-going challenges we face. For a huge proportion of women however, the battle is not just about equal pay but the right to basic things such as education, work, and the freedom to dress and speak as they wish. Whilst we seen some progress in many parts of the world in gender inequalities, significant gaps persist in some countries.

IWD: Why we must #BeBoldForChange in politics and the legal profession

International Women’s Day (IWD) this year is asking us to #BeBoldForChange. We are encouraged to call for a more gender inclusive world. We have explored in the course of this series of blogs why IWD is still relevant and  I want to look at what more we all stand to gain if we achieve gender parity and a more gender inclusive world.

IWD: Transgender women in prison

Previous blogs on the topic of IWD have focussed on the struggles confronted by women in the past, and the many challenges we still face today.  For one group of women however, the battle is not just over equal opportunities or respect, but over the right to identify and be treated as women. In recent years, the subject of transgender rights has been pushed into the limelight following a spate of reported suicides by transgender women placed in male prisons.

IWD: What is being done to combat violence against women?

One of my favourite placards during the Women’s March was “I can’t believe I still have to protest this ****”.  It is 2017, and I cannot believe that the levels of violence against women remain so high.

IWD: ‘Come on, give us a smile’ – the girls and construction mix

My resting face, and in particular my focused face, is stern.  ‘Come on, give us a smile’.  This is what I heard from a man whom I did not know, whilst checking my e-mails following a major construction legal industry networking event earlier this month.  Whilst ignoring the demand, I instantly started fuming inside.  I thought a lot about this minor incident since.
