Government announces tough new late payment laws – what happens next?

There have been fewer than 25 successful convictions for corporate manslaughter since the Corporate Homicide Act 2007 was introduced, but the past week has seen two convictions.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is currently consulting on changes to the way Fee for Intervention (FFI) disputes are dealt with. The HSE has decided that the time is right to move to a fully independent process for considering disputes in relation to FFI. It is also concerned to ensure that the process is accessible and proportionate.
It is now just over a year since the new guidelines for the sentencing of health and safety cases came into force. Whilst anecdotal evidence has indicated for some time that the result of the new guidelines has been an overall increase in the level of fines, a recent BBC article that reports research conducted by BLM Solicitors has put some detail on this.
On 5th April this year the Joint Committee on Human Rights published its report into human rights and business issues in the UK. Entitled “Human Rights and Business 2017: Promoting responsibility and ensuring accountability” the report is important reading for business leaders, lawyers, consumers and NGOs alike.
On 30 March 2017, The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published its business plan for 2017/18 in which it outlines its key objectives for the coming year. The Plan reviews the HSE’s achievements for 2016/17 and sets out four main areas in which it intends to continue to build on these.
