Update To Popular Practitioner Manual ‘Schedule 1 to the Children Act’

23 May 2023

James Pirrie, Director of Family Law in Partnership (FLiP) and Charlotte Bradley, Head of Kingsley Napley’s Family Law team, are pleased to announce the online publication of the 3rd edition of their popular legal text book covering Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989.

The book is a reference guide to the current law and practice of Schedule 1 for both practitioners and individuals representing themselves.

It is available for download in exchange for a donation to one or more of the authors’ chosen charities:

The suggested minimum donation is £100 for firms and £30 for individuals. Once a donation has been made, an email should be sent to FLiP at mp@flip.co.uk to receive a downloadable copy of the book.

First published in 2012, this leading text book has been strongly commended in his foreword by The Honorable Mr Justice Cobb.

The latest edition is dedicated to Sir Nicholas Mostyn, a judge who has been instrumental in developing this area of law (especially in relation to child support) and who recently announced his early retirement.

Charlotte Bradley, Head of the Family Law team at Kingsley Napley comments: “As cohabitation rises, Schedule 1 is an essential piece of legislation to support children and their carers, but is still widely unused. The feedback on our book has always been incredibly positive so we thought it was about time it was brought bang up-to-date and online. We are delighted to dedicate this version to Sir Nicholas Mostyn and wish him well as he steps down from the bench.”

James Pirrie, Director at FLiP, comments: “In our small way, we wanted to pay tribute to Mr Justice Mostyn for his significant contribution to this area of law. The guidance that he has given the profession and thinking that he has started and shaped is centre stage in the approach and the scope of applications for financial provision for costs (Rubin, MG&JF v JF), quantifying periodical payments (GWv RW, re TW&TM, CB v CK, Collardeau-Fuchs) capitalisation of maintenance (AZ v FM) and costs orders. This latest edition includes updates and discussion on these issues which we hope family law practitioners and litigants alike find it helpful.”
