Kingsley Napley LLP has successfully represented the current Prime Minister of Mauritius before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the case of Surendra Dayal (Appellant) v Pravind Kumar Jugnauth & Others (JCPC 2023/0006).
We were representing Mr Jugnauth, the current Prime Minister of Mauritius, as well as another government minister and a member of the Mauritian National Assembly. Our clients were respondents in an appeal from the Supreme Court of Mauritius. The appellant was challenging our clients’ November 2019 election to the Mauritius National Assembly. He was an unsuccessful candidate who had stood for election in the same constituency as our clients.
On 16 October 2023 the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council unanimously dismissed the appeal on all grounds, upholding the validity of our clients’ election to the National Assembly. Further details about the case can be found here: https://www.jcpc.uk/cases/jcpc-2023-0006.html
Our team of Privy Council agents was led by public law partner Nick Wrightson, together with associates Nick De Mulder and Charlie Roe and paralegal Hawa Jogi. We were pleased to support leading counsel Guy Vassall-Adams KC and junior counsel Tim James-Matthews (both of Matrix Chambers) who presented the appeal. It was a pleasure working alongside a Mauritus legal team led by Ravindra Chetty SC and supported by Mauritius attorneys from the chambers of Shamila R. Sonah Ori.
