Lasting Powers of Attorney: recent key developments
6 October 2019 saw World Cerebral Palsy (CP) Day. The World Cerebral Palsy Initiative describes the purpose of this day as raising awareness and celebrating the achievements of those with CP, as well an opportunity to seek solutions to everyday problems and more.
CP affects movement and co-ordination and can present in different ways. In some cases it can severely impair movement, mobility and speech. Some people with CP also have intellectual disability and/or epilepsy.
CP is often caused by brain injury at around the time of birth; for example, where a baby suffers neurological injury because of a lack of oxygen before or during birth. We frequently act for clients who have developed CP as a result of negligent medical care.
Our work often includes obtaining expert evidence to identify the additional needs caused by CP and how those needs can be met. This can include adapted accommodation, specialist equipment, therapies, and a package of care and assistance.
Our experience has demonstrated the importance of focussing on the individual needs of the client and their family. No two people are the same and that it just as true for people with CP.
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is helping our clients, not only to meet the practical requirements of their disability, but also to find new ways to enjoy life. This might include a sensory room for a person with intellectual disability, disabled skiing or activity holidays for a sports enthusiast, or simply ensuring that the most appropriate assistance is available for someone to participate fully in education or social life.
This underlines the importance of the aims of World CP Day. The achievements of those living with CP should be celebrated and every opportunity should be taken to support and enable those individuals.
