The police currently have the power to stop and search citizens across the UK under a wide range of legislative acts for the purpose of preventing and detecting crime. For years, this has been one of the most controversial and contentious police powers, with the promise of extending the powers regularly being used as the go-to rallying call for politicians who want to show that they are being ‘tough on crime’.

A month after the brutal death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in the United States, the spotlight remains firmly on the injustices faced worldwide by Black people (and other ethnic minorities). While law enforcement and the criminal justice systems in the US and UK have come under particular scrutiny, there is also a focus on structural racism and wider socioeconomic disparities.

Tomorrow, global organisations across the world are celebrating Global Pride, and I wanted to write to say how much it means to us at Kingsley Napley to celebrate Pride and to support our LGBTQ colleagues.

On 22 June, people will come together to celebrate what has now been called, “Windrush Day”. The day is being marked with celebrations around the country, which may well be a challenge given social distancing. However, as a quick reminder, this day is to mark the injustice and scandal that many people faced, predominantly from the Caribbean who, after being in the UK for more than 50 years were asked to leave the country.

I wanted to write this blog because from personal experience I know how important it is to be an ally, and in particular how valued it is by our BAME colleagues when people who are not part of the BAME community make a stand alongside them against prejudice.
