The Magna Carta reaches its 800th birthday this year. Multiple celebrations are planned for this milestone including a march by Justice Alliance which took place on 23 February to celebrate the rights enshrined in the Magna Carta.
On 3 March 2015, The Rt. Hon. David Lammy MP launched a paper through the Policy Exchange entitled “Taking Its Toll: The regressive impact of property crime in Britain.”
On 2 March 2015, changes to the offence of “drug driving” come into force in England and Wales. From 2 March it is illegal to drive with specified levels of certain drugs, included legal medication, in your system.
Alison Saunders, the Director of Public Prosecutions (“DPP”), recently announced new guidelines (“toolkits”) reminding police that people may be unable to consent to sexual activity when they are incapacitated through drink or drugs. This blog reviews this guidance and explores whether it says anything new and how it may be applied to cases where both parties are intoxicated.
The CPS is currently consulting on its newly published draft guidance on the treatment of, and information to be given to, witnesses and purported victims prior to and during trial. Whilst this guidance seems to be specifically targeted at vulnerable witnesses, it is not limited to such and could be applied in respect of all prosecution witnesses and purported victims.
