James has represented clients in international arbitration proceedings administered by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC). He has extensive experience of cases in the energy, construction and banking & finance sectors in particular and has advised a mixture of corporate entities and prominent individuals from different jurisdictions especially the Gulf and Middle East. He also sits as an arbitrator and has acted in this capacity on four separate arbitrations in the DIAC.
James joins from Candey LLP where he has been a partner for the last three years. Prior to that he practised at Akin Gump LLP and spent the earlier part of his career at Dechert, including a stint in their Dubai office. He has been recognised in multiple editions of the Legal 500 UK for International Arbitration, including the 2024 edition.
Richard Foss, Head of Kingsley Napley’s Dispute Resolution practice, comments: “James is an exciting hire for us. Increasingly our clients have disputes with international parties where a neutral dispute resolution forum makes sense and/or where there is a desire to avoid the delays and transparency that comes with UK court litigation. It will be fantastic to have James’s skill set in-house to be able not only to explore a full range of dispute resolution options with them but support clients ourselves where arbitral proceedings are preferred.”
James says, “I am delighted to be helping Kingsley Napley with the next build-out of its Dispute Resolution capabilities. International arbitration is growing in popularity for all nature of disputes in many different sectors and for all kinds of parties, given it offers confidentiality, commercial certainty and arbitral awards can be enforced cross-border. I look forward to working with my new colleagues to ensure clients are fully aware of the benefits international arbitration can bring.”
