Clinical Negligence: The power of saying sorry

The Government, via the Ministry of Justice, has now opened a consultation to establish how to improve the law surrounding apologies. As it stands, Section 2 of the Compensation Act 2006 goes some way towards making it easier for organisations to apologise without admitting liability. However, questions have been raised as to whether this is good enough or whether further legislation is needed.

Mind the healthcare gap: the impact of insufficient medical research on women’s health

Over Easter, a study by the British Medical Journal found a  'shock' link between use of the contraceptive injection and brain tumours. The injection, a progestogen contraceptive used by around 380,000 women in the UK, has been associated with a 5.6 times higher likelihood of developing meningioma (a type of tumour affecting the brain and spinal cord membranes) after a year or more of use.

No-fault NHS compensation system: Equality but not equity

The recent Times Health Commission Report with ‘10 recommendations to save the NHS’ contains many sensible proposals, but the idea of introducing a no-blame compensation scheme for medical errors is misguided and would disbenefit as many as it helps.

Ovarian cancer – A crisis of awareness

According to the charity Target Ovarian Cancer (‘Target’), the lack of understanding surrounding this devastating disease has led to ‘an awareness crisis’. This month the charity is redoubling its efforts to put ovarian cancer in the spotlight. It states that there are over 7,000 cases every year, and two thirds of these are diagnosed too late when the cancer has already spread. Target aims to address both a lack of understanding about early symptoms among women… as well as doctors.

Studies have shown that there is significant health inequality for patients with autism, leading to a lower health related quality of life and an increased risk of mortality.
