When metal hip replacements go wrong

Hip replacement surgery is very common, restoring mobility and quality of life to thousands every year in the UK. It is recognised to be the most cost effective for the NHS in returning patients to productive lives. The components wearing surfaces may be metal, ceramic or plastic, and will often last over 20 to 25 years, or even longer for some people.

Bile Duct Injuries: Is There a Case for Compensation?

A recent article in the British Journal of Surgery  states that there have been increasing numbers of legal claims being made against the NHS in relation to bile duct injuries ‘in spite of 30 years of experience and training’. Bile duct injury is a dangerous complication of cholecystectomy – a common abdominal operation to remove the gallbladder, usually in order to treat gallstone disease.

Ureter damage following a hysterectomy

In the recently reported case of JD V Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, Ms JD, a 42-year-old woman was awarded £45,000 after she suffered damage to her ureter during a hysterectomy in November 2017.
