Magic Moments at the Back Up Ball

25 November 2024

According to the latest impact report from charity Back Up, in 2023/24 4,400 people - one every two hours - across the UK sustained a sustained a spinal cord injury. This is a very worrying statistic and support services for those impacted are critically important. Back Up’s vision, as set out in their latest report, is a world where people with a spinal cord injury can realise their full potential. The charity seeks to deliver services that build confidence, independence and inspire people affected by spinal cord injury to transform their lives.

As a solicitor assisting people with spinal cord injuries to bring legal claims where their injuries were caused by negligence or an accident, I am aware of the challenges people face in these situations and feel strongly about the need for more to be done to improve their opportunities.

Last weekend I attended the Back Up annual ball with my colleague Harriet Humphrey and members of Back Up’s Family Support Team. This was a fantastic event and it was inspiring to hear more about the amazing work that this charity undertakes and about the efforts of those who volunteer with them. This was all against the backdrop of a ‘Movie Magic’ fancy dress theme - the costumes were magnificent!

The Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Department at Kingsley Napley sponsor the Family Team at Back Up. This team offer support to family members who themselves can face significant challenges and may feel isolated. The impact report sets out that access to family support services increased 48% from 2022/23 – 2023/24. This dedicated team are making a real positive impact.

I was thrilled to hear the charity CEO, Abigail Lock, speak at the Ball about how the charity have supported more people than ever before in the last year. She explained that in order to drive things forward it is key to increase awareness, increase volunteers and increase donations.
