When a child is born with a serious health problem or disability, parents have the difficult task of coming to terms with the condition and learning to meet their child’s additional needs. In this situation, questions sometimes arise as to whether the pregnancy was managed appropriately and whether the problem should have been diagnosed antenatally.
This BBC headline today comments on draft advice issued by NICE – the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence which suggests that healthy women experiencing a “straightforward” or “low risk” pregnancy should be encouraged to give birth in a midwife-led unit rather than a traditional labour ward.

The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) is the body which manages legal claims made against the NHS in England. Its report in October 2012 noted that between 2009 and 2010 some 5.5 million babies were born in England and that only 5,087 maternity related claims for injury were made against the NHS during this same period.
