When a relationship breaks down resulting in a decision to separate, this is likely to create a challenging period for you and your family where you are faced with change and uncertainty about your future. Understandably, separation from a partner or spouse and thinking about how you will move forward and make decisions independently can be overwhelming. There are steps that you can take independently (some small and others requiring more commitment) in the short term to protect your emotional wellbeing and financial position. In this blog, we set out some examples of steps you can take.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's very public breakup has taken a different (and even more regrettable) turn in recent months with newspapers reporting on the apparently 'vitriolic' dispute over their children. The disagreement has allegedly arisen as Jolie is due to start filming Maleficent 2 in Europe while Pitt is committed to a new role in Los Angeles, making regular time with the children a near impossibility for the 'non-resident' parent. In addition, Jolie has claimed that Pitt has failed to provide ‘meaningful’ financial support. It has been suggested that mediation, one form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), was offered as a means to keep the matter out of court.
The recent case of a British mother of three young children who was extradited from the United States to England to face criminal charges relating to child abduction and passport fraud serves as a stark reminder of the heartbreaking predicament that an international family can face upon the breakdown of a relationship.
Last night saw a rather emotional finale to the first series of The Split as Hannah appears to turn her back on her marriage and choose Christie over her husband Nathan. It perhaps didn’t end quite as I had expected and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was shouting at the TV as Hannah hit the buzzer on Christie’s door! But I’m pleased to hear that the BBC has announced that there will be a second series so who knows yet whether this really is the end for Hannah and Nathan or how the Noble & Hale and Defoes merger will pan out….
Episode 5 of the Split centres around Hannah and Nathan’s crumbling marriage following the disclosure of Nathan’s name being listed on an extra marital website. Like anyone who has just discovered their partner has been unfaithful, Hannah is determined to find out the extent of Nathan’s infidelity and she instructs a private detective, one whom she conveniently has instructed for her client Goldie. As the private detective remarks - “in this digital age, affairs are easier but it’s harder to hide them”.
