New inquiry launched into the use of drones

Following the Department for Transport’s (DofT) December 2016 consultation on ‘Benefits of drones to the UK economy’, on 30 March 2017 the Transport Committee (the Committee) launched an inquiry into civilian drones with the aim of maximising drone technology within a robust safety framework.

Thames Water receives record £20m fine for polluting rivers

On 22 March 2017, Thames Water was ordered to pay fines and costs amounting to over £20m for six separate water pollution incidents on the River Thames and its tributaries.

New measures to support victims of sex crime should not be rushed into

On the 19 March 2017, in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Times, The Justice Secretary, Elizabeth Truss, announced that from September 2017 adult complainants in trials for sexual offences will be able to choose to have their cross-examination pre-recorded in advance of the trial. This follows a similar pilot scheme run since the beginning of 2014 at three crown courts (Kingston, Leeds and Liverpool) for child witnesses and those with mental or physical disorders.

Cutting red tape: A review of the UK’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism regime

Earlier this month, the Government published its Cutting red tape review of the UK’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism regime (see here). The review was led by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and first launched in 2015. It is one of a series of reviews and aims to identify if and where regulations are enforced in an ineffective way whilst imposing unnecessary burdens on legitimate, law-abiding businesses.
