“Divorced Women missing out on Pensions Wealth” - so shouted the headline in the Daily Telegraph on the 7th January 2019, a date coincidentally dubbed “Divorce Day” by the media, so clever positioning by the Royal London to whose Director of Policy, Sir Steve Webb (the former Lib Dem MP and Minister of State for Pensions in the coalition government of David Cameron) the headline belongs.

Divorce can be a long and difficult process, not just for the parties themselves, but also for family members, mutual friends and, crucially, any children caught in the middle. Islamic marriages – are you really married under English law?

For a marriage to be valid in English law, a civil registry marriage has to be performed. This gives married couples rights which non-married couples generally do not have. In addition, upon divorce, married couples can make applications to the court for financial claims for themselves and their children. A number of those opting for a religious ceremony choose not to complement it with a civil ceremony, leaving them in a vulnerable position legally on separation.

Divorce by job description or love actually?

Recent Swedish research (published by The Royal Society) from across The Bridge has come up with some ideas about why their neighbours in Denmark divorce by connecting what the Danes do for a living with the chances of divorce. Why exactly they wanted to look at this relatively small sample is unclear, particularly when there was more interesting research closer to home.
