Parenting under immigration and family law - Sole responsibility is outdated and at odds with the Children Act
Josephine Burnett
Families looking into or who have undertaken an adoption with an international element are often overwhelmed with an abundance of legal proceedings and lawyers in multiple jurisdictions. Amidst this, UK immigration and nationality advice can often be forgotten.
However, finding out what rights your adopted child may have to a British passport and/or a visa to live in the UK either now or in the future is one of the most important aspects of planning for your international adoption.
We have experience of advising families at all stages of their international adoption journey. We have dealt with a number of complex scenarios, including in cases of non-Hague adoptions. We assist British adopters based outside of the UK as well as those resident in the UK and where appropriate, we work together with our family lawyers to ensure all the UK legal issues are covered off.
