I was delighted to take part in a 15km walk on Saturday 6 September for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) with my colleagues Harriet Humphrey and Lauren Warrilow to raise funds for this excellent cause. We were lucky that the sun was shining and that we were met with a delicious barbeque at the finish line to reward us for our efforts.
DVLCC supports children under five with cerebral palsy, chromosome abnormalities and rare genetic disorders. They provide vital early intervention services which include physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, music therapy and hydrotherapy. Their aim is to enable children to realise their full potential so they can lead as independent a life as possible.
In the Medical Negligence Department at Kingsley Napley, we specialise in acting in legal claims related to injuries caused at or around birth and particularly where these lead to cerebral palsy. We understand that early intervention and support through therapies can be life transforming and have a huge impact on a child’s future. It is because of this that we are keen to raise funds for DVLCC and have this year specifically supported their speech and language therapy provision.
Before we set off on Saturday, a parent, whose son has been supported by the charity, spoke passionately about DVLCC’s impact. He asked us to value every step that we took since on this walk we would be taking more steps than many of the children helped by DVLCC might take in a lifetime. This resonated with us and highlighted the significance and importance of the work that the charity undertakes.
