Claims brought by Matthew Hedges and Ali Issa Ahmad against officials of the UAE have been dismissed by the High Court.
A hearing on the question of the Defendants’ immunity from the jurisdiction of the English Court had been scheduled for 26-28 February 2024. In light of the application to their claims of the State Immunity Act 1978 and the relevant case law, the Claimants unilaterally proposed to discontinue their claims in advance of the hearing.
No settlement of the Claimants’ claims has been reached between the Parties. In particular, no payment, offer or inducement was made to the Claimants in return for the dismissal of their claims.
The Parties agreed to jointly ask the Court to dismiss the Claimants’ claims. The Claimants have also undertaken not to bring any new civil claims based on the facts and allegations in issue in the claims.
The High Court made Orders dismissing the claims on 23 February 2024.
Carter-Ruck acted for the Claimants; Kingsley Napley LLP acted for the Defendants.
