Today’s Wills and Probate quotes James Ward on the Autumn Budget 2026

James Ward, Partner and Head of Private Client was quoted in Today’s Wills and Probate’s round-up of legal and estate planning professionals’ reactions to the Autumn Budget 2026. Commenting on the implications for high-net-worth individuals, James noted that the Budget was notable for the absence of significant new tax measures targeting wealthier taxpayers.

James highlighted that the Chancellor announced no increases to Capital Gains Tax rates and made only limited reference to Inheritance Tax. He also noted the absence of changes to established Inheritance Tax planning arrangements, including gifting rules, taper relief, the seven-year rule, excess income relief and existing exemptions. In addition, he pointed to the lack of proposals for a wealth tax, mansion tax increase, UK exit tax or higher Income Tax rates for higher earners.

Commenting on the Chancellor’s approach, James said: “Increasing direct taxation on the wealthy is conspicuous by its absence in Healey’s first Budget as chancellor”.

James suggested that the government’s approach reflects an acknowledgement that the UK’s personal tax burden is already high and that further increases could have a detrimental effect.
