About Andy
Andy advises lawyers and investors on Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) requirements, law firm structuring and professional conduct matters. He has particular expertise in SRA authorisation (including ABS investment, Employee Ownership Trusts and international structures), regulatory due diligence on legal sector M&A, as well as SRA reporting obligations, conflicts of interest and anti-money laundering compliance.
As well as working with major law firms, Andy works extensively with ambitious ABS investors, including private equity businesses and leading legal tech platforms navigating the regulated legal market.
After starting his career in private practice, Andy joined the SRA in 2007, where he ultimately headed up the General Counsel Legal Advice team. During his time at the regulator, he was heavily involved in developing the regulatory regime for ABSs, authored the SRA’s guidance to Schedule 13 of the Legal Services Act, directly contributed to the rulebook, and provided legal input on high-profile regulatory investigations.
Prior to joining Kingsley Napley, Andy founded his own legal regulatory consultancy, which served hundreds of law firm clients at any one time and supported thousands of lawyers via its online platform. Following the acquisition of the business by a private equity firm, he stepped down as CEO and returned to advisory work.
Andy brings a rare combination of insider regulatory knowledge and firsthand entrepreneurial experience, enabling him to deliver highly commercial, solution-focused advice on complex regulatory problems and law firm investment.
His commentary on legal services regulation has been featured on BBC1, and he is a contributor to Cordery on Legal Services and The Law of Legal Services (2nd edition).
