Vanessa was called to the Bar in 2018. Prior to joining Kingsley Napley as an advocate on the regulatory team, she maintained a busy criminal defence practice at Carmelite Chambers. Vanessa is also dual-qualified in the US, and has been a member of the California State Bar since 2010.
As a criminal barrister, Vanessa has appeared in a wide range of serious and complex matters including violent offences, fraud and the proceeds of crime, and drug trafficking. She has significant experience representing vulnerable defendants, including young persons and people with mental health difficulties.
Vanessa has a robust regulatory practice and has been instructed by the Health and Care Professions Council in a wide range of cases, generally at the final hearing stage. These include serious cases involving sexual misconduct, significant fraud, theft of controlled drugs, inadequate treatment of prisoner-patients, and patient death.
Prior to re-locating to the UK, Vanessa served as a federal law clerk in the Central District of California, where she worked on numerous high-profile civil and criminal cases, and a litigation associate at Latham & Watkins in San Francisco. Vanessa was a founding advisor to Essie Justice Group, a pro bono organisation dedicated to women with incarcerated family members, and has worked as a volunteer teacher for the San Quentin University Project and a defence advocate for the Berkeley Death Penalty Clinic.
