Bridget Hughes

Senior Associate

Medical Negligence & Personal Injury

I could not have asked any more of Bridget Hughes. Not only was she superb in handling my case in the legal sense, she was both very understanding and supportive, an absolute constant throughout.

Bridget is an experienced Claimant lawyer who has specialised in clinical negligence since qualification in 1994.  Bridget deals with a broad spectrum of complex claims arising from various fields including gastroenterology, radiology, gynaecology, obstetrics, oncology, surgery, spinal injury and general practice.  She also handles claims for nervous shock.

“It is hard to find words adequate enough to convey the importance of both the action in which we were involved and the expertise and brilliance with which Bridget Hughes handled my son's case. Her hard work, intellect and energy has brought about the best possible result for our son, with life changing consequences for our whole family. There aren't really any suitable words to express how profoundly grateful we are. Bridget Hughes's hard work and excellence has transformed our lives and my son's future.”

An important part of her work is the assessment and development of quantifiable areas of loss.  She is keen to demystify the law and provide matter of fact explanations of the procedures involved.

Previous cases include settlement of a claim for cerebral palsy suffered at birth 23 years ago. In another birth injury claim she obtained a pre-action admission of liability in a case where the CTG trace was no longer available. She has also succeeded at trial in recovering the cost of a home care regime for a client in a persistent vegetative state.

Past cases include settlement of a claim involving double lower limb amputation following delay in the removal of thromboses.  She has also been successful in recovering compensation to reflect the impact on schooling and future earnings as a result of facial disfigurement. Further successful cases undertaken by Bridget include claims involving blindness due to diabetic retinopathy, spinal injury from a missed fracture, failure to detect a neuroblastoma in an infant, still birth, neonatal death and wrongful birth. More recent cases include recovery of substantial losses following laparoscopic injury at the time of hernia repair. She has also recently been successful in claims concerning delay in treatment of subdural haematoma, and delay in diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer.  Bridget’s cases have therefore covered a variety of injuries which also include ischaemic brain injury, cognitive blunting, bowel dysfunction, radiation damage, tracheomalacia, oesophageal stricture, bladder dysfunction, scarring, hypertelorism and PTSD.

She joined Kingsley Napley in 1996 and was promoted to Senior Associate in 2010.
