Arezou Yavarianfar specialises in complex, multi jurisdictional, large scale disputes across a broad range of sectors.

Arezou’s practice focuses on international arbitration, complex commercial litigation and public international law. She advises and represents States, State-owned entities, ship owners and charterers, as well as some of the world's largest commodity and energy trading companies. She has represented clients in arbitrations governed by the ICC, LMAA, LCIA and UNCITRAL rules.

Arezou’s commercial litigation experience encompasses arbitration related applications including challenges to Awards, advising on jurisdiction and interim applications. She also has experience in substantive large scale and complex commercial disputes in the High Court and Court of Appeal. Arezou’s experience in transactional matters has involved advising on energy related projects, with an emphasis on the oil and gas sector.

Arezou studied Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science; she also obtained a Masters in Public International Law at the same institution, passing with Distinction.

Arezou is fluent in Persian and conversational in Spanish

  • Acting in an offshore construction dispute for an FPSO operator in defence and counterclaim against a shipyard in LCIA proceedings for circa EUR130,500,000 for the design and upgrade of an FPSO
  • Acting for a South American state-owned oil and gas company in UNCITRAL proceedings as the claimant in an offshore drilling rig dispute
  • Acting for UK retailers in multi-million pound competition claims in the High Court against Visa and MasterCard in relation to anticompetitive interchange fees
  • Advising an independent oil and gas company in an ICC dispute for circa US$100,000,000 arising under a Joint Bid Agreement concerning the proper distribution of a Participating Interest share in an exploration licence in the MENA region
  • Defending and counterclaiming on behalf of an independent exploration and development company in an ICC dispute against onshore drilling contractors in a claim concerning the payment of a demobilisation fee under a Drilling Contract.
  • Successfully advised and intervened on behalf of Rosneft Marine (UK) in the Court of Appeal in the case of PST Energy 7 Shipping LLC Product Shipping & Trading SA v OW Bunker Malta Ltd &Ors [2015] EWCA Civ 1058
  • Represented one of Denmark’s largest container shipping companies, as the defendant in High Court proceedings in disputes under bills of lading
