Discrimination on the grounds of age is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010. It is possible to objectively justify age discrimination where such discrimination is a "proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim". So, for example, the fixing of a maximum age for entry to the medical profession may be justified to ensure a reasonable period in post prior to retirement.
