A breast surgeon is a specialist in the diagnosis, investigation and management of breast problems, including a breast lump, nipple discharge or skin thickening. Investigations may include mammography and biopsy of a breast lump, possibly including lymph node biopsy. The lump or tumour may need to be removed and reconstructive surgery may be required.

Plastic surgery is the surgical speciality that involves reconstruction and, while commonly associated with reconstruction for aesthetic purposes, also is key in hand surgery, microsurgery, skin surgery and the treatment of burns.
