Ophthalmology is the study of disorders of the eye carried out by specialist surgeons known as ophthalmologists.  The majority of patients are seen in outpatients but a minority require operative intervention, including with laser treatment.

Common conditions that eye doctors treat include:

  • cataracts;
  • squints;
  • glaucoma;
  • problems with the retina.

Ophthalmologists work closely with many other specialists because the eye links with many other diseases.

The majority of clinical negligence claims involve cataract surgery, but others include vitreo-retinal and corneal surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastics and neuro-ophthalmology.
