Ear, nose and throat surgery (ENT surgery) is the study of disorders of the ear, nose and throat by ENT surgeons.
Common conditions include:
- hearing loss;
- earache and ear discharge;
- balance disorders;
- tinnitus (ringing in the ears);
- nasal blockage;
- sinusitis;
- swallowing disorders;
- tumours of the head and neck.
Common problems found in clinical negligence include:
- delay in diagnosis of ENT tumours;
- damage to the facial nerve during surgery causing facial weakness;
- incorrect management of ear problems, resulting in deafness or tinnitus;
- inadequate technical performance of rhinoplasty.
ENT surgeons will often work closely with maxillofacial surgeons, who specialise in facial surgery.
