If you are in hospital undergoing investigation, you may require some form of imaging carried out.  Radiology is the study of imaging, including x-rays, ultrasound scans, computerised tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, contrast studies (barium swallow, barium meal, etc.).  Most of the tests are carried out by technicians (radiographers) and interpreted by doctors (consultant radiologists).  Radiologists often specialise in a particular area of interest to them, e.g. neuroradiologists have a particular interest in imaging of the brain and spine, and specialists in nuclear medicine have a particular interest in radioactive isotopes.
