Gastroenterology is the study of disorders of the gastrointestinal system, namely the gut and abdominal organs, including the liver and spleen, by gastroenterologists.  Specialists in liver disorders are known as hepatologists. 

Common conditions include:

  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS);
  • gastritis/gastric ulcers;
  • liver disorders, including hepatitis and cirrhosis;
  • pancreatic problems;
  • cancers of the abdominal organs, including gastric (stomach) cancer, colon (large bowel) cancer and liver cancer. 

Problems encountered in clinical negligence include:

  • delay in diagnosis of an ulcer or cancer;
  • inappropriate management of pancreatitis;
  • unacceptable technical performance of a gastroscopy or ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography).
