The elderly represent a particular challenge to doctors and healthcare workers, as they are a complex group of patients with particular needs.  Elderly Medicine specialists, therefore, have to have a wide range of skills, enabling them to manage acute and chronic problems in a multidisciplinary environment, and to recognise many different diseases covering a large range of specialities.

Elderly patients can suffer with conditions and diseases that do not affect younger patients, and a more holistic approach is often required to manage such patients appropriately.  For example, the elderly are especially prone to adverse drug reactions and to multiple pathologies.

Traditionally, the elderly have not always had the advantage of proactive care and, while this is improving, it may be very relevant in a clinical negligence context.  There can also be social issues that may require additional legal assistance beyond just medical malpractice matters.
