Clinical Pharmacology is the study of drugs and their therapeutic use.

Clinical Pharmacologists specialise in studying drugs, how they work in the body, their therapeutic effects and their side effects.  They work alongside other clinicians to assist in the prescription of medications, to maximise their therapeutic benefit and minimise their toxicity.  They are especially involved in the analysis and prevention of adverse drug reactions.  Clinical Pharmacologists are also involved in clinical drug trials.

Toxicology is the study of toxicity of substances to the body, including the study of poisons.  Toxicologists are especially involved in the assessment and treatment of overdoses, adverse drug reactions, poisoning and overexposure to toxic substances (including chemical or physical substances).

In the clinical negligence context, pharmacologists and toxicologists may be involved in cases where:

  • there has been a prescription error;
  • an error in the administration of a particular drug or substance;
  • where an adverse drug reaction has occurred; or
  • where specialist management of an overdose or overexposure to a substance has been required.
