Cardiology is the study of disorders of the cardiovascular system, namely the heart and blood vessels, by cardiologists.
Common conditions include:
- high blood pressure (hypertension);
- ischaemic heart disease, including angina and heart attacks (myocardial infarction);
- abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias);
- left heart failure (pulmonary oedema).
Common problems found in clinical negligence include:
- misdiagnosing a heart attack, usually as gastritis/indigestion;
- delay in adequate treatment of high blood pressure;
- failure to treat heart failure properly;
- failure to manage an arrhythmia appropriately, including following a cardiac arrest.
